The Center's doctoral program in Archaeology, Heritage and Museum Studies brings together these three fields of research in innovative ways. Archaeology here at the Center does not focus only on the ancient period, unlike most other institutions in the country. Instead, the Center encourages doctoral research on medieval archaeology, colonial and contemporary archaeology. The Center is also keen on developing an important space for critical heritage studies that looks at the context and politics of issues of heritage in India and the ways in which historical sites, artefacts and museum collections are engaged with. The aim is to enable the production of nuanced bodies of research that speak to the demands of a developing country that must balance its livelihood requirements with the need to conserve past vestiges for humanity.
